The Four New Years Resolutions Every Homeowner Should Make

Many New Years resolutions end up losing their meaning over the years. But as a homeowner, you owe it to yourself to make some serious resolutions this year that will keep your property and family safe throughout the year. It’s okay to not live up to your goals all yeah, but if you never try, you won’t make it!

1. Heating: Dust and Filters

The first thing to take care of, especially in the winter and spring season, is get into a regular routine of changing the air filters for your heater. Not only will this make your heater more efficient, it might even prevent a house fire. Another thing you can do to improve the heating and vent circulation is to keep your house fairly clean — especially when it comes to dust. Clean out your floor vents and vacuum regularly — you’ll definitely notice the difference!

For all your heating needs, we highly recommend contacting Columbia Heating & Cooling.

2. Plumbing: Drains and Flushes

Plumbing isn’t usually something most homeowners think of as something they can actively work on to prevent problems. However, there are actually a number of things you can do to increase efficiency and save you from some headaches down the road. Start by flushing your hot water heater and making sure it is set at the temperature you want it at. Many hot water heaters are set as high as 150 or 160 degrees, but in most cases, setting it around 120 degrees is a more appropriate and efficient temperature. As a homeowner, the primary thing you want to avoid is a clog. Running hot water into your drains periodically is a good place to start, but we also suggest pour a mix of half baking soda and half vinegar down your drains. This will really put a stop to clogs in the future!

For all your plumbing needs, we highly recommend contacting ReaMech Inc.

3. Electrical: Bulbs and Outlets

There are a lot of things you can do around the house to make your electrical system both safer and more efficient. First off, it’s a really good idea to finally make the change to energy efficient, fluorescent light bulbs. Not only do they look better, they also last longer. That means less times you have to change out those bulbs and more money you save in electrical bills! Secondly, if you live in an older home, it is a good idea to do a scan of the outlets throughout your house and find any electrical outlets that haven’t been upgraded to GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupters) or Tamper-resistant outlets.

For all your electric needs, we highly recommend contacting either Squires Electric or Lovett Services

4. Roof: Clean those gutters!

Typical Oregon winter, your roof gets 30,000 gallons of water. That’s a lot of water that needs to get through your gutter system! So this year make it a goal to keep those gutters cleaned out. We know what a hassle it can be — especially when it’s wet and cold outside — but keeping them clean will end up saving you a lot of money and time in the long run. Lastly, we all know that it can be easy to let your roof go in terms of cleanliness. After all, nobody goes up there right? Unfortunately, a roof full of moss and growth can not only be damaging to the structural integrity of your home, it also can really bring down your home’s curb appeal.

For all your roofing needs, we highly recommend contacting Bliss Roofing.
