What is Code Upgrade Insurance and Do You Need It?

If you’ve ever gone through your home insurance documents before, you probably know the feeling of getting to a certain paragraph and having no idea what various terms means. Code Upgrade insurance is one of those that often has homeowners puzzled, but in actuality, it’s not anything terribly complex.

Each year, housing codes are constantly being updated to make houses safer and more efficient. These housing codes touch every part of the house, whether that’s electrical, plumbing, or even how thick the insulation in your house needs to be. That’s why it can be really important to have code upgrade insurance.

When disaster strikes at your home—whether that’s a fire, a flood, or some other kind of disaster—there will be a lot of reconstruction and rebuilding that needs to happen. However, it’s illegal for certified contractors to restore your house to the old housing code that isn’t the most current. Assuming your house wasn’t built this year, that’s going to mean that you’re going to need to pay for the additional cost of upgrading to the new code standards.

For example, if you hire OHI Construction to take care of a water loss in your basement, we can’t just put back what was there if the construction doesn’t meet the new code standards. It’s an extra cost that homeowners should always be aware and looking for in their insurance documentation. If you aren’t covered for code upgrade insurance, you might be stuck with an unexpectedly high bill that you can’t do much about.
